Catherine Lee is a Taiwanese-American illustrator and designer from Columbus, Ohio, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She works as a Senior Designer at Penguin Young Readers where she loves designing book jackets, brainstorming title type options, and adding fun elements to book interiors to create an eye-catching package that complements the incredible work of artists she works with.
At a young age, Catherine loved to draw short comics and write and illustrate stories about her friends, animals, and on one occasion, a very sassy raccoon! She grew up reading the Sunday comic strips and Japanese manga (with a soft spot for shoujo romance), yet unfortunately didn't have the patience to sit through a drawing class. It wasn't until she started high school, where she'd start drawing more frequently after discovering her dad's dusty Wacom tablet that he used for signing documents. Nowadays when she's off work, Catherine loves to draw silly lil guys--mainly her original characters Mr. Cat and Basil the Tomato Cat. She also likes to binge-watch k-dramas she’s watched before--Reply 1988, Our Beloved Summer, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Navillera, to name a few--and is always still brought to tears despite having already watched the drama. She can often be found sneaking glances at dogs on the street, catspotting in her neighborhood, and trying to resist making her wallet (and herself) cry because of matcha lattes that often end up tasting like milk. Catherine is open to freelance opportunities in children's illustration and children's book cover and interior design, and she hopes one day she'll be able to write and illustrate her own picturebook!
